Moving is filled with anticipation for what’s to come and a bit of anxiety about all the details. One major question for most people preparing to move is, “How much do I need to save up?”

Financial experts recommend saving between $5,000 and $12,000 before making a major move.

We have helped countless people move in and out of the greater Cincinnati area, so we’re familiar with all the unexpected costs that may arise during the process.

Financial Consider Before Moving

Before you come up with a solid amount to save, you need to create a budget prior to your move. Remember to plan ahead and research thoroughly for a smooth transition to your new home.

Cost of Living

Start by researching the cost of living in your new location compared to your current one. A good place to begin is by looking at the cost of living index

Housing, utilities, transportation, and groceries may vary significantly from one place to another. Whether you’re renting an apartment, buying a house, or moving into a shared space, consider factors such as rent or mortgage payments, security deposits, and any upfront fees required by landlords or real estate agents.

Distance and Timing of Your Move

The distance of your move can impact both the cost and logistics involved. Moving locally within the same city or town is less expensive than relocating across the country or internationally.

Factor in transportation costs, such as fuel or plane tickets, and overnight accommodations if your move requires an extended journey.

Along with this, the time of year you choose to move can affect your expenses. Moving during peak seasons, such as summer, may result in higher prices for rental properties. Consider scheduling your move during off-peak times if possible to save money.

Unexpected Expenses

Unexpected expenses can arise during the moving process, so it’s essential to have a contingency fund set aside. This emergency fund can cover unforeseen costs such as repairs, last-minute accommodations, or unexpected delays.

Aside from the move itself, don’t forget to account for the setup or transfer of utilities and services at your new residence. This may include electricity, water, internet, cable or satellite TV, and trash removal services. Factor in any installation fees or deposits required by service providers.

Moving to and From Cincinnati

Where you live matters, and costs can vary significantly from state to state and even city to city. You can better prepare for the costs associated with your relocation, whether you’re bidding farewell to the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area or making it your new home.

Moving Out of Cincinnati

Leaving the area behind? Here’s what to consider financially:

  1. Cost of living differences: If you’re leaving Cincinnati for a city with a higher cost of living, like San Francisco or New York City, brace yourself for sticker shock. Housing, groceries, and other everyday expenses may see a significant uptick. Adjust your budget accordingly to accommodate the increased costs.
  1. Housing market variations: The real estate market in Cincinnati may differ from your new destination.

The neighborhood you’ll be in impacts this cost too. Research whether you’re moving to an area with higher or lower housing prices, and budget accordingly for rental deposits, moving truck rentals, or hiring professional movers.

  1. Travel expenses: Don’t overlook the cost of getting yourself to your new home. Whether you’re driving across state lines or flying, factor in all expenses such as gas, meals, lodging, and plane tickets.

Moving to Cincinnati

Embracing Cincy? Here’s what to financially plan for:

  1. Affordable housing options: Cincinnati’s housing market may offer more affordable options than cities in states like California or New York. The cost of living here might be 6% higher than the rest of the state but 3% lower than the national average. Housing is here 15% cheaper than the U.S. average!

Take advantage of this by budgeting for rent or mortgage payments that align with Cincinnati’s cost of living. Research neighborhoods to find the best fit for your budget and lifestyle.

  1. Utilities and services: Prepare to set up utilities and services at your new Cincinnati residence. Utilities here are 1% lower than the national average.

While the cost may be slightly lower here, be sure to budget for electricity, water, internet, and trash services. Account for any activation fees or deposits required by service providers.

  1. Activities Budget: There’s lots to do in the city and surrounding area! Enjoy amenities like the Findlay Market and vibrant cultural attractions like the Cincinnati Art Museum, or catch a Reds Game!

Invest in potential savings or increased expenses based on your lifestyle preferences and interests.

Hiring a Moving Company – How Much to Save

When it comes to relocating, hiring professionals can be a game-changer, streamlining the process and reducing the stress of a move.

We recommend calling or contacting a moving company for an accurate estimate. However, here’s what to consider when budgeting:

Distance

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, the distance of your move is a key factor in determining the cost of hiring movers.

Long-distance moves typically involve higher expenses due to factors such as fuel costs, travel time, and overnight accommodations for the moving crew.

Size of the Home

The size of your home and the amount of belongings directly impact the cost of moving.

Larger homes with more furniture require more labor and resources to pack, load, and transport. Conduct a thorough inventory of your household items and discuss your specific moving needs with the moving company for an accurate estimate.

Move-In Date

The timing of your move can influence the cost of hiring a moving company. Peak moving seasons, such as summer months and weekends, often mean higher rates due to increased demand.

If flexibility allows, consider scheduling your move during off-peak times or weekdays to save money on moving services. Additionally, booking your moving company well in advance can help secure preferred dates and avoid last-minute rush fees.

Delicate or Antique Items

If you have delicate, oversized, or valuable items that require special attention, additional care and handling may be necessary.
